Diets For Losing Weight - Which Ones Work And Which Ones Don't?

If you want to choose the best diet to help you lose weight, you will need some information about some of the popular ones that are sweeping the nation. Monitoring your food intake is the first step to losing weight.

It means that you have to control your eating habits and cut down on the amount of calories you consume. Along with the diet you choose, it is important to exercise on a regular basis to tone up your muscles. As you lose fat, your muscles tend to become flabby.

Some of the popular programs are:

1) Atkins
2) South Beach
3) Zone
4) Weight Watchers

Atkins is essentially a low carb diet. If you are on Atkins, you start off by cutting the amount of carbohydrates to at least 20% in the first phase. This diet allows you to eat all the protein and fat you want in whatever quantity you wish and still lose weight.

The South Beach program is not a low carb diet in the same sense as Atkins. The essence of this diet is to eat the right carbs and the right fats while eating three balanced meals a day.

The Zone and Weight Watchers diets concentrate on counting calories. The Zone Diet has also been called the 40-30-30 diet because the food you eat each day should be 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein and 30%fat.

It is similar to weight watchers, in that you can choose the foods you eat to help you lose weight by counting the calories. With Weight Watchers you count the points to add up to the total you are allowed depending on your present weight and the amount you want to lose.

Which one is right for you?

Well, that depends on your goals.

Over a six month study between Atkins, Zone, South Beach and Weight Watchers revealed that those on Atkins lose more weight initially. But this effect wore off and at the end of the study the participants had lost on all programs had lost weight in a fixed range.

The results of this study indicated that all diets resulted in weight loss as long as the participants stuck to it. One other point to note was that weight loss was greater in participants who supplemented their nutrition with regular exercise.

No additional weight loss supplements were taken in this study. All these diets are based on the fact that if you burn more calories than you consume you will lose weight. So, if you combine one of these diets with a moderate exercise program you will accelerate yourself on your path to weight loss.
