Stress plays a huge part in all of our lives now, we all face challenges (good and bad) and obstacles, and when it gets too much, when we are past our comfort zone, then stress manifests. It can be good sometimes, personally I work best when I am slightly stressed, it pushes you to work faster and stay focussed on the task at hand, but too much stress can have detrimental effects. In origin it is mostly psychological, but there are definitely physical symptoms and also behavioural.

So what is stress? Well it is a primeval response that we have to situations that we find threatening, nowadays we don't get attacked by sabre-tooth tigers much so we tend to get stressed about less threatening situations. It puts our body into a 'fight or flight' situation where we are primed for a fight or to run and save ourselves, our body is flooded with adrenaline and hormones which exact a heavy toll on it. Recent research suggests that between 60 and 90% of all illness comes from undue stress, so the physical symptoms of stress listed below are just the tip of the iceberg.

Did you know that stress will cause bad posture as you tend to slump and sag, which in turn can cause back ache, and these are just the more long term physical symptoms of stress. Symptoms that can arise much quicker are:

Digestive problems Sweating Aches and pains Joint pain Muscle pain Muscle tension Palpitations Sleep disturbances Asthma Skin problems

So as you can see the physical symptoms of stress can have a huge effect on your life and compound the external problems that you are already having. To reduce these symptoms or eradicate them completely then you need to employ effective stress reduction techniques such as deep breathing and exercise.
