If you have turned on your television lately, chances are you have seen or heard something about child abuse or domestic violence. Whether it is a TV show, a rock song, a trial over 1,000 miles away in New Mexico, or even cases right here in my backyard, stories of abuse have been hitting out airwaves in great numbers.

In July, there was a highly publicized trial of a 16 year old boy, Cody Posey. The boy was charged with murdering his father, step-mother, and step-sister. He was 14 at the time of the murder. During his trial, people from around his town testified that Cody was physically, mentally, and sexually abused by his father and step-mother. The stories were gruesome and terrifying. At this time, Cody is serving time in a juvenile facility. He will be release no later than his 21st birthday.

More recently, a rock band, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, released a song that deals with the topic of domestic violence or abuse in the home. The song, entitled "Face Down", as well as the video that accompanies it tells the story of a young woman who is in an abusive relationship. The video shows how she hides the abuse from everyone. In the end, the woman decides to take the right step and end the relationship and the abuse.

There are always countless episodes of the TV drama "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" that deal with abuse. Most recently, the drama dealt with the situation that is going on right in my backyard, the Gravelle trial.

This trial deals with a Huron County, Ohio couple that is accused of abusing their 11 adopted children. According to the Huron County Sheriff's office, the couple kept their children, many of whom were mentally handicapped in a sort of makeshift cage system. These cages were made out of bunk beds and chicken wire. Former foster children will also be testifying about alleged physical beatings.

Abuse is a serious situation. If you or anyone you know are being abused, contact the appropriate officials immediately. If you want to help out with the cause, there are plenty of charities to get involved with. Check your local volunteer organizations for more details. Stop the abuse. If more people get involved someday, hopefully soon, abuse will no longer be such a great problem in the U.S. It will be just a coincidence.
