Kids are growing up quickly these days. It's not long before they have out grown birthday parties with jelly and ice cream and musical bumps and they have moved on the next phase. A phase of loud music, make-up, designer trainers, boys and jewellery as they strive to be seen as adults.

As parents where does that leave you when you want to throw your teen girl a birthday party. Well unless it encompasses one of the above you don't have much chance. An activity you might consider for a teenage girl's birthday party is jewellery making, not with beads and elastic but with real gold or silver. Great for the girls because they get to make themselves a unique item of jewellery, it could be a friendship necklace. They also get to have a great time and release their creativity.

All you need is some metal clay. Metal clay is a substance that, as its name suggests, is part metal (silver or gold) and it is mixed with a non-toxic organic binder, which has the properties of clay. It's not massively expensive, a starter kit costs around £25, which comprises of metal clay, some tools and a starter mould. You may require more metal clay depending on the number of children you have invited to the party.

Once the girls have fashioned their amount of metal clay it needs to be left to dry. This usually takes around two hours. Time for party food and birthday cake! Placing the metal clay in a low oven if can accelerate the drying time.

After drying the metal clay needs firing. This can be done with a blowtorch or it can be done on a gas hob. It is up to your decision if you allow the girls to fire the items themselves.

Once fired the organic binder is burnt away and all that is left if the gold or silver.

The girls can each thread their friendship pendants on a chain and wear.
Each girl ends up with a beautiful moment of the birthday party and everyone will have fond memories of a fun jewellery making activity.
