Start The Holiday Right - Consider The Journey To The Airport

There are a number of options that the holidaymaker or business traveller can consider when planning the first part of their journey - getting to the airport! Let's consider the pros and cons:

1. Drive yourself, park and fly.

Ideal for the short visit. You can shop around, especially using the internet, and get some deals through pre-booking. Every Airport offers a choice, so it pays to research the options. A bus takes you from car to terminal, and some car-parks look after your keys, so there's no chance of leaving them in some foreign hotel or office! The down side comes when you have to pay for a couple of weeks worth of parking, and also when you have to face a motorway after a long-haul flight - not to mention the cost of wear and tear on your vehicle and the fuel to get you to and from the airport. A good option to consider, if you can afford it, is valet parking - not as expensive as you might think - and if offered it is genuinely terminal based and therefore cuts out the buses and extra luggage hauling.

2. Use Public Transport.

OK for those living close to an Airport with good, regular links - one thinks of the Heathrow Express for example: plenty of room and convenient access. A complete pain for anyone living any distant from an airport, often involving trains, changing trains and, of course, rail fares and rail efficiency (not the best in the UK). Buses do offer an alternative, with constraints on luggage space and timetabling, as well as the very full roads they have to travel. This option needs careful planning and plenty of built in extra time for the journey.

3. Ask a friend!

Far and away the best option! Either get them to give you a lift in their car, or drive you in yours. A friend or family member will treat you far better than any train, bus or taxi driver. They know where you live, have a genuine interest in your holiday / trip, and can be trusted to shut up and let you sleep if you need to. This option has everything: inexpensive (it need cost you no more than a bit of 'duty-free'!), saves on parking if they drive you in your car (check insurance first), and will mostly be great company both ways.

4. Why not Book a Taxi?

Taxi fares can be fixed in advance, booked in plenty of time, and someone else takes the strain. You get dropped and met at your terminal, at the time you want - clever use of the internet means that taxi drivers can take delays into account and still be there meeting you to take you back to your door. Obviously a major disadvantage of this option is the price per mile by comparison with the other two, but the extra factors are clear: door to door service, flexibility, and enough competition out there to offer some good deals if you ring around.
