Article Submission - The Cornerstone of Article Marketing

Article submission can be as varied as the publication or site to which you are submitting, although generally there are three methods.

The first is a query: "Dear editor, I have a great idea for an article. My idea is ... might you have an interest?"

The second is a proposal. A proposal is simply a longer, more detailed query. You send a letter to the editor stating your idea, talking about your expertise in the area, how you came to find out about the idea, who you have lined up to interview, and the stance you will take. You also indicate if you can supply photos as well.

The third method of article submission is to just send the completed article, hoping for publication. None of these processes is wrong. Which you choose depends on the publication's preference - something you must know before you attempt article submission.

There are several ways to find out about a publication's required article submission process. You can find the publication on a local retailer's shelves, buy it and read the writer's guidelines that are usually found in the back; you can go online and read the writer's guidelines from the site; or you can look in a book such as Writer's Market, which publishes the guidelines of thousands of magazine and book publishers.

If choosing a book such as Writer's Market be advised that the book can be costly and is revised each year. Any local library will have a Writer's Market on its shelves, or you can spend a few hours at the local Barnes & Noble or Borders Books perusing its pages for the price and pleasure of a café mocha.

Another alternative for determining the publisher's article submission process is to call them and ask. If you are looking for a journal, article or other periodical that is not easily accessible you should ask also if they would send a sample copy. Some may charge to do this, others provide them for free.

What you don't want to do, however, is ask for a sample copy of magazines for the general public, such as Woman's Day, Family Circle, Playboy, Redbook, and so forth. These should be purchased. Asking an editor for a copy of such easily accessed magazines is telling the editor that you don't read their magazine.

You should also consider article submission software. This allows you to submit your articles to hundreds of websites in a very short period of time. Why would you want to use this article submission software? Why would you spend money on the opportunity to give your articles away? The answer is simple. The faster you get your name out there as an expert in your field, the faster people flock to your site to pay for your products or your services.
