Depression In Teens - What To Look For

Depression is a very serious illness that not only affects adults, but just as easily can affect adolescents. Depression has an impact on how we think, feel, behave, and our health in general. This illness continues to be more common in teens as their lives get more stressful as approximately 5 out of every 100 teens suffers from depression.

There are two forms of depression that someone could be diagnosed with. When a person feels sad or down most of the time, they have what is called major depression. Bipolar disorder is when you not only feel sad at times but this switches with feelings of agitation or recklessness. When someone starts to have these symptoms on a regular basis, help must be sought immediately from a counselor, psychologist, or even a family member.

Regrettably, most teens do not get the help they require and when untreated, depression can get worse. The good news is that most folks can be helped if they get the appropriate treatment. How do I tell if my child is suffering from some type of depression?

Signs of Depression

The person feels sad, guilty for no good reason, cries more than normal, and feels tired and restless the bulk of the time. Also, the individual may start sleeping for long hours or have difficulty falling asleep at night. Eating habits can also vary as either the person will eat more or begin losing their appetite.

Life in general appears meaningless and the person can feel like nothing good ever happens and will never happen again. Negative feelings will become prevelant and a loss of feelings in general can take place.

Maybe the activities that you enjoyed or brought you happiness no longer bring these feelings. These could be things like sports, music, and hanging out with your friends. You now would rather just be left alone and not be troubled or involved in anything. You also may feel irritated at very insignificant matters and lose your temper and overreact.

There are several other signs of depression but if somebody you know displays some of these behaviors, please get help now. There are several options available such as counseling but at the very least just talk to somebody and let them know you may have a problem.
