Some moms are proud when that moment finally arrives to take their daughters shopping for their first bra.

It's a momentous event as you say goodbye to your little girl and welcome a young woman into the world.

Your daughters onset of puberty is likely to be similar to your own, so if you were an early starter, your daughter is likely to be too. Onset of puberty can vary, for some girls this could be as young as age 7 or 8, whilst for others as late as ages 13 or 14.

As the breasts go through various stages, once she's started maturing, your daughter is likely to take five or six years to fully mature physically.

Whilst you may have started off with a " training bra ", which was a bra designed for girls who didn't quite fit the standard sizes, it is now more common for girls first bra to be a sports bra style.

Alternatively, girls will find the soft cup bra quite comfortable to wear too.

When is she ready for her first bra ?

On the whole, your daughter is ready when she thinks she is ready! Even if you think she still needs to grow a little, remember that she is probably feeling self-conscious about her growing body and needs your support at this time. Also it can be embarrassing at school if other girls are wearing bras and your daughter may just want to stop feeling embarrassed about looking different.

Remember, your daughter may feel embarrassed about asking you for a bra - so it's important to help her in this transition to womanhood.

What should I do to help ?

It's important to make sure that she gets the right size. It's estimated that at least 50% of women wear the wrong size bra - leading to discomfort and possible health problems.

Making sure that your daughter is properly fitted can be a fun shopping experience for you both. It can also help her learn about the importance of getting fitted and feeling comfortable wearing your bra.

If she is playing sports, make sure that you buy at least one sports bra style, to offer her support. Many girls nowadays also find the sports bra a style that's ideal for their first bra. Yep, fashions have changed since you were a girl!

Be Supportive

It has probably taken your daughter weeks to pluck up the courage to ask you for a bra - so being supportive at a time when girls can find the changes to their body embarrassing is essential.

Handled well, supporting your daughter in choosing and buying her first bras can help continue to build and strengthen that mother-daughter bond of friendship between you.
