Navratri: A Step Towards Festivity

Navratri is the stepping stone of Indian Festivals season .It is the worship of various gods and goddesses for nine days. Deities like Durga, Luxmi , Kali and Saraswati are worshipped in these days . Navratri comes two times in a year that is in the month of March - April and in the month of September-October , during this time period lots of fasting and Puja is be done by the devotees. Prayers are sung for various goddesses.
There are some interesting facts related to Navratri. Some of these are:
• Month of September -October is considered to be more important Navratri season as it marks the beginning of the festive season and people pray the goddess and other deities by offering them flowers and fruits.
• Every day is devoted to different goddess like the first three days are devoted to goddess Durga.
• In these three days goddess Durga and her different appearance like Kali, Parvati are worshipped.
• On the fifth and sixth day goddess Luxmi is prayed, she is a mark of wealth and prosperity
• Seventh and eighth day is dedicated to goddess Saraswati , the goddess of knowledge
• Ninth day unmarried girls are prayed, girls who have not reached their womanhood.

There are many legends associated with Navratri and the famous one is about the legend of Lord Rama and Ravana. It is a belief that when Ravan abducted lord ram's wife, he along with Hanuman and Laxman declared a fight against Ravan. Ravan had the blessings from various gods so it was not easy to defeat and kill him. Therefore, then Lord Ram prayed to Goddess Durga for nine days, after which she told him the secret to kill Ravan. As well as these Indian festivals is also famous due to a lot of astrology aspect.

The other story of Navratri is that all gods where in trouble due to a demon name Mahisasur, as he initially gained power through his prayer and later on started to misuse them by defeating gods and disturbing peaceful lives of the people on earth. It was then, all the gods came together to generate a power by the name of goddess Durga, who fought with Mahishasur. The fight was carried on for nine days after which the demon was killed. Another interesting legend is when Ksthriya did not take part in any warlike activities during the monsoon season. As soon as the monsoon season came to an end they could start with their activities again but before resuming the activities, they used to sing prayers for goddess Durga for nine days.
