Depression is not a physical illness, though it might be caused by some physical illness. It is the state of mind when one feels things are not fine. Depression is largely typical of urban syndrome. It is caused by the fast paced life in which all cannot cope up equally well as others.

By and large, depression is caused by lifestyle. So it is possible to beat depression by changing the lifestyle. But for more than one reason it is not at all easy to change the life style and the depression gets chronic. Once things get worst then external help is needed.

Finding the Right Antidepressant:
Finding the right one is a challenging task before taking antidepressant. Proper treatment plan and the right prescription are a must before start pumping up pills. Though the pill has been approved by the FDA for popular consumption it is important to consult a therapist before getting into antidepressants. An approved practitioner could prescribe off-label drugs too though they are not approved by FDA.

The doctor knows what the patient needs and the drugstore vender need not. It is better to rely on the psychiatrist than the drug vender. A wrong drug can cause irreversible damage to general health. It may be fine to try a couple of brands before finding the right antidepressant that is not allergic and without side effects.

But it is advisable not to opt for quick-fix solutions but work systematically with the help of the family doctor or psychiatrist. The doctor should know of the symptoms and their severity, health history, lifestyle and other physical illnesses. Age, sex, physical profile, diet and occupation, marital status, pregnancy status, family history of depression are the other information a doctor should consider before arriving at a decision on the prescription.

Trying them out
Some drugs can be taken full dose on the first day of the treatment. Some antidepressants should be taken gradually so that the body and mind gets used to the drug. It might take weeks before determining its effectiveness.

Anti depressants do not heal the cause of depression. They work on the symptoms. If no improvement is noticed after trying a drug for over a period of 4 weeks, it is time then, to meet the doctor again and look for alternative drugs.

While switching medication it is a must to taper off the current drug or else the old drug residues might react with the new ones and cause greater harm to the psycho-physiology of the patient. Besides finding the right treatment one must determine the right dosage depending on the patient's clinical profile.
