Reaping your Hotel Rewards: is One Big Night at a 5 Star Hotel the Right Choice?

So your many nights of hotel accommodation have led to plenty of points on your hotel loyalty program. But should you splurge all those points on one swanky night at a luxurious 5 star, or is it best to make those reward points last and spend three or more nights in a less highly rated hotel?

Your choice will depend on the type of traveller and, to some extent, the type of personality you have. Those of us who are impulsive spenders are more likely to want to shell out on a top notch hotel and go for the most luxurious accommodation that our points will buy us. After all, it's not often that most people get pampered in a top hotel, so why not treat yourself and blow those reward points in one fell swoop and get the plushest accommodation you can?

The more conservative travellers amongst us may prefer to make their reward points go as far as possible. A five star hotel is all very nice, (and who wouldn't want to get the celebrity treatment?) but three star hotels are still normally very pleasant places to stay; if you can get three nights at a three star for the same amount of points as one night at a 5 star, then surely it's better value to take the first option? Remember that three star hotels will have fully en suite bath and shower facilities and a good standard of comfort and equipment, such as a hair dryer, direct dial telephone, toiletries in the bathroom and some level of room service should it be required.

Then again, why settle for less than the best when it's free with your hotel loyalty program anyway? With a five star hotel, you will find spacious and luxurious accommodation, impressive interior design with great attention to detail, and the highest standard of comfort and elegance. Furnishings with be immaculate and service from hotel staff should be formal and well supervised with flawless attention to guests' needs without being intrusive. You can also expect top notch cuisine, with dishes being produced to the highest international standards, and serving a large range of beers, wine and sprits.

So the choice is yours: one night at a five star hotel, or three nights at a three star hotel. But if you really can't decide, you might be able to adopt the middle ground and plump for two nights at a four star hotel instead.
