Depending on the configuration, DVR-s can serve from 1 to 16 cameras (there are those for 32 and 64 cameras), as usually offered for 4, 8, 9 or 16 incoming television channels. In the selection of the recording device most important parameter is the "speed of record". If the recording speed for a single channel (one camera) is less than 15 frames per second you can feel it tear the picture as part of the information is lost. In most cases this is not a problem for systems, controlling office buildings or other objects with slow processes. But for objects with high level of security, real-time DVRs (working in real time) should be used.

Recently acquired great popularity are so-called Stand alone DVRs. They allow the inclusion of security detectors, and various output devices, such as: sirens, transmitters, dialers for notification of any alarm event by phone, other blocking devices, etc. Thus receive a fully integrated security system. DVRs like these are extremely comfortable for residential buildings, warehouses or other premises in which most of the day lack people. Review of the recorded information can be carried out remotely via the Internet.

Another type of DVRs are computer based DVRs. Capture card is placed in the PC and it becomes a DVR. In most cases the resources of the computer are used only for digitalizing and storing of recorded information. It is not recommended to use such computer on the Internet for other purposes because it reduced the reliability of the system.

Most modern recorders are currently NVR (network recorders). They can be either in the form of a device or virtual (software). NVR serves gather and process information from IP cameras and WEB-server. NVRs provide exceptional picture quality in real time, flexible configuration, remote control. Large centralized and/or distributed video control systems can be build with their help.
