Bad credit repair is unknown to many. They see credit repair ads on TV from companies and law firms that offer to clean up their credit reports for a price, but that seems a far off goal that is only attainable through these experts. What they don't know is that this is something they can do themselves for only the cost of postage. There is nothing special that a 'law firm' can do that you cannot.

The one thing they do have on their side? Knowledge! Knowledge of what the laws state and how to apply them. But this is something that you can learn through Internet resources and studying the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). Once you know what creditors, collection agencies, and credit reporting bureaus can and cannot do, you will be more effective towards your own bad credit repair than any law firm or company can be.

The laws in the FCRA & FDCPA were made to protect consumers, and can assist you with bad credit repair, but many consumers do not even know that they exist. This is mainly because most consumers also don't know that they have a reason to know about credit laws or that they may have a reason to need bad credit repair.

Many would be shocked to discover that the major credit reporting bureaus have a 70% error rate, 30% or more are significant errors that can cause a consumer an unfair denial of credit. That is actually when many people begin to take a closer look at their reports—when they get an unexpected denial from a mortgage or auto lender—and learn about bad credit repair.

What could these people find when they check their credit reports? Accounts that are not theirs, paid items being reported as unpaid, reported late payments that make no sense, and delinquent account that are far past the 7 year reporting period. The only way to get rid of these things, accurate or not, is to learn about bad credit repair. Although the words 'bad credit repair' may make you shudder, in the eyes of a lender, what is on your credit report is truth. So, even if you don't really have 'bad credit', you need to learn how to fix your credit reports in order to get that unfair account taken off of your report and restore your borrowing reputation.

Even if you don't need to fix your credit now, it is always a good idea for you to be aware that it is a possibility should you ever need it. More importantly, it is important for you to know that bad credit repair is something that you can do on your own without paying anyone. All it takes is a little bit of time and research to make sure you are familiar with the laws and the steps you have to take to put bad credit repair to work for you.
