Power of Exponential Numbers
Perhaps the most common example of a growth rate that grows began really slowly at first only to explode later on is the size of the total human population on earth. For thousands of years the number of humans was nearly static with only a very slow growth rate, however in the last couple of hundred years the growth rate has exploded and the doubling time is shortening. The power of these numbers can be better understood when one realizes that despite the length of human history if we added up all the individuals who ever lived by far the majority have lived in the last 200 years (if not even closer to 100 years) - despite the many thousands of years before, the majority of people who have ever lived are likely to be living now.
A similar example is when you theoretically (if it were possible) consider folding a piece of paper 50 times. How thick would that paper end up? The fact is it would extend from here to the sun - the power of exponential numbers at work again.
So what use is this knowledge to the average business operator on the internet? The fact is the power of exponential numbers is at work all the time on the internet. Look at any popular site and look at the growth of its traffic. Sites don't start at millions of hits a day, but over the years they can grow to that size. Where many fail on the internet is they are not willing to invest one of the most important internet commodities - no not money - time! Even Google the inspiration for many would be net millionaires took time to grow. Although its about 10 years old most of that growth occurred later in the J-curve, not in the first few years. Numerous other examples occur online - ebay, article directories, forums, myspace, etc.
The moral - Don't get discouraged because your traffic is not growing as fast as you like, so long as it is steadily increasing the power of exponential numbers can kick in. The secret is to get started as soon as possible, preferably before the competition.
