Voting for President

What's one to do when they don't think either presidential candidate represents their views? Well, let me speak for myself as next week I will make my journey to Jersey Village to vote early as I have done for years. I desperately wanted Michael Bloomberg to run. He was my first choice as my web site on third party candidates attests. Mitt Romney was my next best hope and he didn't make it. So, what's a man (that would refer to me) to do?

In all good conscience I won't vote for president this go-round. Say what?

I will vote for the state and local candidates. I'm not a "party man". Neither party truly represents my views as my historical past shows having been a John and Booby Kennedy supporter and one who also backed Barry Goldwater. Go figure.

I like Obama because he represents a national racial healing (if we'll allow it) and he represents an international healing (all religions must learn to co-exist). Obama also cares about the down-n-out as he's been there. Mostly though I am drawn to his temperment, message of hope, and less combatitive nature. But, and it's a big but, I am not confident of his ability to comprehend the scope of international complexities. I worry about his financial and taxation policies. And I certainly do not agree with his stance on abortion.

I like McCain because he's a man of principles, he's been around the block a few times, he's a no nonsense man with values that I share. And yet, he represents an arrogance when it comes to "Country First" that will surely keep us at war (somewhere). He appeals to my sense of duty and I appreciate his sacrifices to which is all about. I depart with him though when it comes to elevating Wall Street over Main Street. Neither candidate has the balance as I see it.

In essense of brevity, let me stop there and back to practicality- reality.

Democrats are going to win 25-35 seats in the House and 7-10 in the Senate. Congress will determine our future for the enxt two years even if McCain wins. As this political science student sees it one week out, Obama is going to win- maybe WIN BIG.

So, since I am conflicted and a pragmatist, in Texas, the electoral votes are going to McCain regardless of who I vote for. Texas is solidly in the the Republican-Red state column. And since popular vote doesn't matter in the end, my vote isn't going to matter- for President- in Texas. But, I can make a difference in state and local races and I'll be a part of that for sure.

Who am I voting for president? No one!

And in Texas, it's not going to matter.   :-)
