Beautiful, intellectual and sunny city of Bordeaux has entered the 21st century with the aim of gaining its second youth by means of numerous reconstruction projects. Tourist's and economic centre, world wine capital, the centre for university and research life, the city of holidays and taste - Bordeaux is confidently developing and remains a very popular and attractive city that preserves its historic charm.
Bordeaux is located by the river Garonne, 32 km from the Atlantic coast. The fifth French largest city was started as the Roman commercial post. Then, for 300 years it belonged to England, whose influence on local style and taste was not of the minor ones. Many city's huge chateaux are still the English property. Many of them are also opened to the public.
The old Bordeaux is concentrated around Saint Pierre district, with its narrow streets, old churches and impressive mansions adorned with balconies of forged iron, and the arcades. A lot of restoration work has been carried out during the last years, but despite this, many streets still look a bit shabby. Built at the site of the former Roman church, Grand Theatre demonstrates the city's splendid past. Its façade is decorated with a huge portico and columns with statues of 12 muses and Graces. Quinconces esplanade is located not far from here. It occupies almost the 12-hectare territory, which makes it the biggest European square of the kind. Place de la Bourse is not as big, but no less magnificent than Quinconces. The square verges on Garonne's embankment and it is here that the beautiful Romanesque style fountain is found. Built during the Napoleon's Spanish campaigns, Pont de Pierre bridge connects two banks of the river. Most charming views open up from the bridge at nighttime, when everything is spotlit with floodlights. As for the city's main cathedrals, the Gothic basilica of Saint-Michel and Saint-André Cathedral are of importance to note. The latter is surrounded by numerous museums, the most remarkable of which is Musée des Beaux Arts with wonderful collection of works by Titian, Rubens, Matisse and Marke. The old city of Bordeaux is rather small, and the best way to observe it is to make an unmounted trip. You can also order a boat trip.
However, those are not only its architectural attractions that Bordeaux is popular for. The main thing that interests tourists is a choice of its wines, acknowledged all around the world. Wine-making is a part of Bordeaux history as the city is surrounded by approximately 120 hectares of vineyards. Thousands of chateaux, dozens of private and cooperative wine-cellars are found on this territory.
It is no wonder that local landscapes are rich in vines. Every ground area between the castles and village houses, vast farms and small lands, has its unique character, which defines the unique taste of grapes cultivated there. All the Bordeaux vines are divided into 57 various brands, offering a true mosaic of tastes.
