Sleep disorders not only seriously affect your sleep but also your everyday life. Lack of sleep will not only increase the risk of serious health problems but also affect how you communicate with others. Stress, anxiety, irritability and depression are all caused by lack of sleep and can seriously affect your relationship with others.

Insomnia and sleep apnea are the most common types of sleep disorders. Those suffering from insomnia will find that they are unable to fall asleep half an hour or more after going to bed. Insomnia is not dangerous in itself but can lead to tiredness during the day and leave you irritable and even depressed. Insomnia can also lead to a lack of concentration and motivation.

Those suffering from sleep apnea will take short pauses in their breathing during sleep. The disorder can be dangerous if left untreated, so it is important to look out for any signs of the condition. As sleep apnea occurs when you are asleep, it can be difficult to tell whether or not you have the condition, but signs and symptoms may include excessive tiredness during the day. You can also ask a partner or family member to monitor your breathing whilst you are asleep, which will help to diagnose the condition. Obesity is a common cause of sleep apnea, so making sure that you keep your diet healthy will help to reduce the risk of the disorder.

Another serious disorder is narcolepsy. Narcolepsy occurs when individuals fall asleep unexpectedly during the day, despite receiving enough sleep the night before. The condition should be treated immediately, as it can be dangerous, particularly to those who need plenty of concentration during the day due to driving long distances or operating heavy machinery for their job.

Keeping a diary of your sleeping patterns or a dream diary will enable you or your doctor to diagnose a sleep disorder. Behavioral methods or counseling can also help. Relaxation methods such as taking a warm bath or shower before bed will also increase your chances of getting a good night's sleep.
