Stress Countdown

We are getting up at 4:00 am EST. The trip to the hospital will take 2.5 hours. For the last few weeks my friend has been waiting for a surgery date. At last it has arrived. I am doing the driving and I should now be in bed. It is hard to sleep when you are the one going for surgery but I do not like driving in a large city so that is my challenge to get past.

I will see myself driving with confidence ,hands steady on the wheel with a smile on my face and plenty of time on the clock. That will be my visual aid to prep myself for the trip. As with anything we do, being prepared is always the best way to go. If you are confident that you have done your homework ,so to speak. The trip or whatever is the situation takes on a whole new perspective. All I need is a map and good driving conditions and I know I can do this. I am also motivated because I know my friend needs a strong supportive arm to hold.

She is having a disc removed in her back and the unknown is really stressing her out. The fact that it is so close to the holidays is another reason for concern, never mind the anxiety of what the operation will be like. I have been working with her this week, giving her tips I use to relieve anxiety. I am impressed that in the short time we had to do this work, she has greatly improved in her attitude about the whole procedure. Before I started to help my friend ,she gained 15 pounds due to over eating from stress. I do have to say that some of the weight gain is due to inactivity because of the pain and type of injury she has.

Well as of tomorrow at 9:15 am EST the only thing she will see is the light over her head as they put her to sleep for the operation. I know that what she has been going through ,the pain of post surgery will be a sign that she is on the mend and not as before with a never ending relentless suffering pain. It is easier to deal with pain after surgery as you know there is an end to it. I was telling her this and it helped her put things in perspective. It is normal to feel apprehension when facing difficult times but there is hope and thinking of how great she will feel when this is done is another comforting fact. Look at all the activities and a better quality of life that is ahead. What a wonderful bit of inspiration that can be. After 3 years of suffering ,it is time to get the reward. An end to the pain is certainly the best news and reward,so keep thinking about that as you see yourself returning to a better, brighter, healthier future my friend.
