Southerners are most certainly known for their deep-rooted traditions. These traditions avail themselves in all areas of southern life, including their names. When it comes to baby names, the southern parent is likely to go either very traditional or quite contemporary. It's fun to discover the roots of these southern baby name traditions to give us all a better understanding of their meanings.

Since the southern states were settled, people have been proud of their heritage and ancestry. When it comes to names, it's easy to see these traditions being carried on for generations. One of the most common southern traditions is passing down names through generations. Last names, middle names and first names might be used in a family for hundreds of years. Not always passed down as "juniors" for male children, many women have names like this as well. Passing down southern baby names is a great way to show how proud you are of where you come from and pay respect to your ancestors.

With the surge in modern names, southerners are often choosing a more contemporary mode for naming baby. Often, they combine a modern name with one from the family to give the tradition a new life. For boys, names like Jackson, Noah, Jayden, Ethan, and Landon are popular contemporary baby names. Girls might be named Emma, Ava, Isabella, Chloe, or Abigail. These names certainly still have a slightly old-fashioned flair while still giving a contemporary life to baby's name. Southern baby names are fun and unusual, but mostly just show how much thought they put into choosing these names. There are few things more important than one's name, so it makes sense that the southern parent wants to give their baby just the right name. Whether they go with a family name or add a new name to the family, baby names are fun and adorable.
