Golf has become a very popular around the world over the last few years. The number of golfers increased as well as the numbers of golf courses. Ever since Tiger Woods arrive at the golf scene, there is a boom in junior golfers. Kids look at Tiger play and want to play golf.

If your children express interest in picking up the game of golf, it is a good lead into introducing to them the great game. It is always a good thing to start the game at a young age. As parents, we need to encourage and help grow/maintain their interest in golf. Here are some pointers that I hope can guide you on this.

There are a lot of junior golf programs around the world. Go to the local clubs or golf schools and enquire about the programs they have to offer. Or ask around your friends and acquaintances who have been through this stage. Seek all advice you can on which golf program is recommended. In the US and Canada, you can visit www.juniorlinks.com where you can find information about junior golf programs. Also, choose a program where the environment is suitable for your kids and where you kids can make new friends and have fun.

Spend time with your kids at the driving range. For golfers, this means bring your kids to the range when you there to practice and let them have a good swing at the golf balls. For non-golfing parents, no worries, you can still bring them to the nearest range and let them have fun while you can continue your favorite book. Even miniature golf is a good exposure for the kids to have fun as well. Treat this as a family outing or a bonding session. Believe me, it is worth it.

It is important that your children, at this stage, to enjoy the game. Parents need to help nurture this. Help them enjoy and appreciate the game. Encouragement is definitely appreciated. There may be a tendency to give comments or criticize the swing, but I would advice against them. Let them enjoy themselves and leave the instruction portion to the professionals.

Encourage them to watch golf programs on TV. Let them see how the game of golf is being played. Even better, if you can bring your charge to a live golf game the next time a tournament is in town. This is worthwhile the effort. I brought my kids to love golf games and ever since they would want to go to everyone. Kids being kids, they would like to run around the courses, chasing after players and cheering after their "idol". The best moment my kids had was when they received balls and gloves from the PGA and LPGA golfers themselves.

In summary, parents can help junior in getting started in the game by providing the all important encouragement and also providing the access to golf for them.
