1. Black beans

High in protein and high in fiber, this food is something I eat just about every day. Each can of black beans costs about 48 cents and contains 25 grams of fiber and 25 grams of protein. Also... there's absolutely no sugar in it. Eat at least 1 can a day... or if you're a fanatic like me, eat 1.5-2 cans a day.

2. Lentils

Again, high in protein and high in fiber... a perfect combination for weight loss. A 1 pound bag of lentils from Wal-Mart costs 72 cents, and has 13 servings of 11 grams of fiber and 10 grams of protein... a whopping 143 grams of fiber and 130 grams of protein in the small bag.

If these didn't take some time to cook, I'd choose them over black beans. But black beans take 5 minutes maximum to cook. So I go for the convenience. However, you can do what I do and cook a big batch of lentils and reheat for later use.

3. Eggs

Even though egg prices are rising, they're still cheap. 18 eggs will cost you around $2.10. Each large egg has 6 grams of protein, minimal carbohydrates, and about 4.5 grams of fat (not much fat, don't worry). Eggs with some black beans or lentils on the side would make a perfect breakfast.

4. Tuna

Each can of tuna has about 33 grams of protein with no fat or carbohydrates (for the water-packed tuna). I like to mix it in with black beans for a good 1-2 punch of protein. 1 can of tuna alone isn't very filling (at least for me), so I combine it with other things such as black beans, eggs, lentils, or a salad.

5. Apples

Apples are great because they have a high water content (you eat water), high in fiber (5 grams per apple), packed with nutrients, easy to bring wherever, and they fill you up. I use these as between meal snacks or I eat them right before a meal to help me eat less. I eat 2-3 apples each day.
