My First Trip to Europe

I have fond memories of my first trip to Europe, which I took with my parents and sister in 1981, at age 19. My parents got 15-day Eurail passes for all of us, which allowed us to travel throughout Western Europe by train. We ended up visiting eight countries in just two weeks. It was a great trip, although quite rushed.

We flew from San Francisco to Frankfurt, stopping along the way in New York and Paris. Once in Frankfurt, we enjoyed a great dinner at the airport. We ate some terrific German frankfurters and potato salad.

We took Eurail around Europe, spending just one night in most places we stayed at. We visited Germany, Belgium, France, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Austria. I recall eating some excellent food in Germany as well as visiting the Hoffbrau House in Munich. The Hoffbrau House was a bit disturbing. I recall some very rowdy Germans drinking some very large steins of some strong beer. I was only able to drink a few sips, but I still felt drunk afterward.

In Belgium, we visited Brussels and Brugge. I particularly liked Brugge, a medieval town. I recall a hospital there with several religious paintings, including some of St. John the Baptist with his head cut off. I'm glad I was never a patient at this hospital!

The country in which we spent the most time on our trip was Norway. We stayed there for six days. We took a beautiful ferry ride along several of the fjords. We also found the Norwegians to be quite friendly.
