Home Improvement Articles - Protect Your Home From Thieves
One way to prevent is to predict. Once in a while, you and a friend should take a walk around your property and take on the mind of a thief. Imagine that if you were a thief, what break-in points would you take advantage of. Try to see if you can tell whether the inhabitants are home or not. You might notice that a garbage can out in the front of the house on a day that is not garbage day could trigger people not being home. Also, having no lights on, or having the drapes shut, or even doing things out of the ordinary, like turning off the sprinklers, or clearing the driveway of toys can let a thief feel confident enough to break in.
Another simple way to protect your home is to utilize a few thief deterrents. You might want to get a threatening or barking dog and keep it in the backyard so that the thief knows he will have to face a menacing guard. If you don't actually have a dog, you can still erect a Beware of Ferocious Dog sign and then have an electronic recording of dog barking in the background. House alarms and bright lights that flash on with sensors can frighten a thief and send him running away.
One simple way to protect your house is to get in the habit of locking all doors and windows. Invest in a few good dead bolts and strike plates for the bottom of the door. Getting eyebolts for your window can keep thieves from forcing them open. However, the safest type of windows are glass block windows, as they cannot be broken through. They are not at all pleasing to the eye, but they guarantee security, and could be used in places that the eye does not see often, maybe a back window or a basement window.
Protecting your home means protecting everything in it. Do a regular household inventory of all the valuable items you possess. That way, you know what is missing if a thief does get in, and you can provide a list to the police who can more successfully retrieve your stolen goods and items. It is helpful to have a visual inventory, as well, by taking a video camera and capturing footage of the contents of each room to see what is there and then to watch it again after a burglary.
It's good to invest in a safe box or some kind of highly secured vault for your most precious items. These can be locked up with a code or some kind of lock device and should store things that are most worthy. Irreplaceable documents, family jewels, and even firearms with the ammunition kept apart from it. You never want the burglar to find the firearms and the ammunition, as that can be highly dangerous for you and your family.
