Dogs are naturally aggressive; this is inevitable because a certain level of aggression is needed for survival. By keeping this in mind, it would be easier for you to understand your dog's aggressive behavior and you will not have to tremble in fear whenever your dog becomes a little bit aggressive. To understand the underlying concepts of dog aggression, here are some common reasons why dogs become aggressive to some extent.

Territory
Human as we are, we can become very territorial at times, so we should expect the same thing from dogs. In fact, dogs are more territorial than humans even. Your dog is the one that decides for himself which particular part of the family yard "belongs" to him. Your dog can also be very territorial about his bones, his toys, and even his human adoptive family. If an outsider gets too close to his deemed territory, then this can be a cause for aggression.

Fear
Now, this is one of the scenarios that you need to be cautious about. When a dog fears for his safety, then he would not hesitate to become aggressive to ensure his own safety. No one is exempted from being the recipient of this aggressive behavior, even the family member that the dog deems his most favorite. If, for some reason, the dog becomes afraid of a particular person, even if he or she is part of the family, then the dog would become aggressive even to that person.

This is why dogs need to develop social skills early on. Make sure to expose your pet to people and other animals at an early age so that your dog can become as socialized as it should be.

Dominance
Never allow your dog to become too dominant because this opens a lot of opportunities for your dog to become all the more aggressive. If you allow your dog to feel that he can be the boss of you, then he will indeed become more aggressive, to show you he is indeed the boss in the house. You have to fulfill the role of leadership here; after all, you are the more dominant in terms of species, right? Now, this does not mean your dog will not test you when it comes to establishing authority. Just make sure to stand your ground.

If your dog becomes too aggressive for comfort, do not hesitate to ask your vet for assistance here. This way, you can also incorporate the appropriate methods and techniques to deal with the situation better.
