The term ‘psychic' has been derived from the Greek descriptive root term ‘psi' which stands for apparently anomalous and paranormal processes of extrasensory perception such as psychokinesis, telepathy, clairvoyance, clairsentience, and so on. The word ‘psychic' also has connection with the Greek term ‘psychikos' and parapsychological term ‘psyche' and both these terms refer to the mind, spirit or soul, of a person. The mechanism of the causation or occurrence of such processes cannot be easily and rationally explained in terms of the ordinarily available knowledge of physical sciences.

The term ‘psychic' can be used as both adjective and noun. As a noun, its plural form ‘psychics' refers to subject that studies the psychic or spiritual phenomenon of paranormal cognition or action. In its singular form the term ‘psychic' refers to a person who has interest in this subject and possesses psychic or metaphysical powers of intuition, telepathy, extrasensory perception and so on. He/She can demonstrate these abilities in actual practice for the benefit of the suffering fellow human beings and even animals. It may be noted that the numerous psychic processes are just different manifestations of a single paranormal power of extrasensory perception or intuition rather than being essentially distinct and different from each other.

Psychics, like any other professionals, are either born in a family where one or both parents or grandparents posses and practice such powers. The psychics, in some cases, inherit the psychic talent as legacy from them. In other words, the power of psychics is in their genes. A child born in the family of doctors or lawyers has a natural disposition towards such subjects. The second alternative is there are children who are born with psychic talent irrespective of the abilities of their parents. These people are the ones who had psychic knowledge or power in their previous births and may be evolving them further towards some higher goal in their present life.

The third alternative is that a person learns the subject of psychics under the tutelage of some individual teacher or a guru or from an institution.
