While some people are familiar with the concept of aeroponics, or the growing of plants without soil by continuously misting nutrients and water onto the roots, few understand its smaller scale uses and benefits.

Aeroponics is widely used on a commercial basis to grow a whole host of plants. For example, the most familiar crop that is often grown with aeroponics is likely to be the beautiful juicy red tomatoes that you see in your grocery store.

What is often not known is that an aeroponic system can be scaled down to a household size quite easily. In truth, with aeroponics you can grow just about anything from African Violets to zucchini. Most commonly, people grow lettuce, herbs and tomatoes in their home with great success.

Lettuce- Lettuce grows easily under moderate conditions when using aeroponics. It can actually grow faster than you can consume it, so take care to only plant a few seeds initially. Some suggested lettuce varieties are Bibb, Red Leaf or Oak Leaf.

Herbs- Herbs in particular grow very fast with aeroponic systems, though there are some growers that claim their herbs don't taste as strongly as soil grown herbs. Others seem to disagree.

Like lettuce, herbs grow easily because they have moderate needs. Nutrients, sunlight, temperature and moisture are all tolerated at easily attainable levels.

Tomatoes- Tomatoes grow a bit slower than lettuce or herbs, but the yield can be significant and occasionally overwhelming! Many beginning growers prefer to start with the smaller varieties like the cherry tomatoes, but larger tomatoes are grown just as successfully.

The really great thing about all three of these crops is that they can all be grown year round with the use of grow lights.

Imagine the fun of picking your own tomatoes, salad or herbs right inside your home and serving them with dinner during the coldest months of the year. On the other hand, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit, imagine growing them in your garage or basement and selling them to local restaurants.
