Arthritis is the name given to 100 or more rheumatic diseases that affect joints, connective tissues and muscles throughout the body causing moderate to severe pain. The meaning of the word arthritis is "joint inflammation". Inflammation is the human body's natural reaction to disease, injuries, swelling, stiffness and pain. When inflammation lasts for a protracted period it causes tissue damage as in the case of arthritis. Arthritis not only attacks the person physically but also drains his morale. Some types of arthritis are acute and they last for a short period, while most are chronic and last for a long period.

There are many causes for arthritic diseases. It can be due to injuries, birth defects, imbalances in body chemistry that cause chemicals to be deposited into the joints, infections, wear and tear and also due to heredity. Females are more affected by this disease than males. There are two common types of arthritis namely osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is caused due to the breakdown of cartilage while rheumatoid arthritis is caused when synovium, the lining present in joints becomes inflamed.

Glucosamine, which is an amino salt has been used to a great extent for treating arthritis especially osteoarthritis. A certain amount of glucosamine is produced within the bodies of animals and man. As the person ages the body loses the ability to produce enough glucosamine, and the cartilage starts deteriorating. Therefore glucosamine is supplied externally to the person. It helps to repair the degenerating cartilage and strengthens it further. It is also very effective for easing the pain, improving mobility and stimulating the production proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans and synovial fluid which are the building blocks of cartilage.

Consumption of glucosamine may cause mild side effects like nausea, diarrhea and stomach pain. By and large it is very safe to consume glucosamine. It is usually supplemented with compounds like chondroitin and MSM to increase its effectiveness. Although medicines are effective, a personalized exercise program can boost the confidence of people suffering from arthritis and help them cope with stress.
