The landscaping around your concrete swimming pool deserves just as much attention as the design of the pool. There is no point in building a nice-looking pool if the pool landscape does not blend in. For instance, a natural shaped pool that offers a lagoon-type visual effect should have appropriate surrounding foliage, rocks and pebbles. If you are planning to use the pool during nighttime, then path light surrounding the pool or up-lights in trees are necessary. Pool decking, furniture, spas and fire pits are other features that can transform your pool area. Pool fencing also forms part of the landscape, serving as an important safety feature as well. Here are some landscape design ideas that can enhance the overall look and feel of concrete pools.
Pool decking
The swimming pool deck can be built using a number of materials including concrete pavers, travertine pavers, bluestone, stamped concrete and a host of other options. Bluestone lends a stunning look but heats up quickly, making the deck uncomfortable and at times impossible to walk on. Travertine pavers are attractive and easy on the feet. Stamped concrete is also a good option-here the patterns are stamped into the material. You can also go for tumbled pavers or natural stones depending on your preference. The material you use for the pool deck/patio should provide a slip-resistance surface to prevent slips and falls.
Trees and shade
Foliage is a key landscape feature of concrete pools. They offer shade and enhance the beauty of the surroundings. They also provide a sense of privacy screening the pool area from inquisitive eyes. Though evergreen trees like pines and oaks look beautiful, they tend to shed leaves, pines and acorns, messing up the pool deck. A broadleaf holly is a better idea as is the Japanese Zelkova. Avoid trees that attract bees and insects as well as those with sticky barks or sharp thorns. Ornamental plants such as dwarf yaupon holly, maiden grass and ophiopogon are ideal options.
You can also consider adding free standing roofed structures like gazebos or pergolas to the pool surroundings. If there are no space constraints, then you can opt for larger-sized gazebos/pergolas to accommodate furniture and lounge chairs. This will make the pool area a more livable space.
Lighting
Path lights can be placed along the walkway leading to the pool. These lights give off enough light to help you make your way to the pool comfortably. Path lights can also be placed around the concrete pool, but in this case, they have to be positioned in the plant beds and in the grass. The problem with this placement is that you can accidentally end up damaging them when you are mowing the lawn. An outdoor gas light is a good option as it lends a quaint look. Down lights can also be placed high up on tree branches. Torch lights in the pool vicinity also look nice.
Pool fencing should be placed such that it provides the necessary safety without compromising the look of the pool surroundings. An attractive gate or vines intertwining the fence can make the fencing look more attractive. Landscape designs for concrete pools can also be incorporated for pools constructed from different materials.
