Choosing the right resort for your holiday in Spain

Spain has been the top choice for UK holiday makers for more than a decade, being the destination for more than 30% of our holidays abroad. This article is a brief guide to some of Spain's most popular resorts.

Benidorm is an ideal location for fun in the sun, with its beaches, bars and theme parks. It has three major beaches, Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas, each of which has been awarded the EU's blue flag to mark beaches meeting stringent safety and cleanliness guidelines. During the summer months Benidorm has an extremely active nightlife, with more than a thousand restaurants and over thirty clubs Benidorm draws a lively crowd. For those looking for an authentic Spanish experience from their holiday in Spain, Benidorm may not be the ideal choice, indeed it has been described as ‘Blackpool in the sun'.

For holiday makers in search of a more peaceful break, a holiday in Menorca may be a suitable choice as it is largely unspoilt and quiet compared to its neighbours. Menorca's coastline is dotted with small resorts which are perfect for holiday makers looking to explore the beaches hidden within the islands many small coves and inlets. The capital of the island Mahon is home to one of Europe's largest natural harbours, around which can be found an excellent selection of cafes, bars and shops. As with many of the Spanish islands, water activities including windsurfing, sailing, diving and snorkelling are extremely popular in Menorca.

Majorca (or Mallorca) really is a destination with something for everyone. For those looking for a beach holiday Majorca has over 80 beaches, with some of the best being found in the north of the island. With an assortment of slides, shutes and pools the Hidropark and Aquacity waterparks will appeal to children, with the latter also featuring a mini-zoo and children's farm. The islands capital Palma should be of interest to sightseers with the gothic La Seu cathedral being one of the most popular attractions whilst Clubbers will be in their element in the notorious resort of Magaluf, with its wide and varied assortment of bars and clubs.

Ibiza is famed for being the clubbing capital of Europe and the nightlife is the major draw for many of the visitors to the island. Ibiza is home to some of the biggest and best clubs attracting the top name DJ's every year. As such, many of the resorts have an extremely lively nightlife. Aside from the parties the medieval Eivissa castle at D'alt Villa which overlooks Ibiza town, is steeped in history and is well worth a visit while youngsters will enjoy the water parks and play areas in Playa d'en Bossa.
