Baggy eyelids are not necessarily a sign of aging. Due to heredity, many younger patients have puffiness under their eyes or a heavy fold of skin which obscures the normal crease of the upper lid. The lower lid "bags" are caused by fat that protrudes from under the eyelid skin. Redundancy of the skin may be more severe in the upper lids, thereby obscuring the natural crease. Sometimes this skin can interfere with vision. Los Angeles Eyelid Surgery to remove this excess skin can accomplish two goals: improvement of vision and enhancement of appearance.

In some patients, the problem is exacerbated by drooping of the brow skin. In such cases, a brow lift is the procedure of choice. We are now performing eyelid surgery with the CO2 laser. The incision for the lower lids is made on the inside of the eyelid leaving no visible scar. The skin is then refreshed with the laser to diminish the fine wrinkles.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery is usually performed at the same time under sedation. There is no need to be completely asleep for this type of surgery. Stitches dissolve within five to seven days.

This procedure is commonly performed in conjunction with a facelift operation. However, younger patients choose to improve their eyelids prior to the need for other facial surgery.

Surgery Time: Approx. 2 hours
Anesthesia: Patient is under sedation or twilight sleep.
Post Operative Care: Sutures dissolve; there is no need for removal

Blepharoplasty can enhance your looks and give you self confidence but wont make you look entirely different. So be realistic in your expectations.

1. The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who are physically healthy and psychologically stable.

2. Most are 35 or older.

3. If droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age.

4. The medical conditions which make blepharoplasty more risky are thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism and graves diseases, dry eye or lack of sufficient tears, high blood pressure or other circulatory disorders, cardiovascular disease.

5. If you have a detached retina or glaucoma. Check with your ophthalmologist before you have surgery.

If you have a pocket of fat beneath your lower eyelids but dont need to have any skin removed, your surgeon may perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. In this procedure the incision is made inside your lower eyelids, leaving no visible scar. It is usually performed on younger patients with thicker, more elastic skin.
