Have you ever wanted to make your own cheap baits that make carp go crazy?! Using excellent well-proven ingredients and top flavours, this article will give you various highly potent and very easy methods that anyone can exploit to cheat fish senses; so you really can catch the biggest fish - and save loads of money!

The flavours Chocolate Malt and Scopex are in the top of the list of the most successful carp bait flavours. Chocolate Malt (just like Scopex) is an incredible flavour that has caught me loads of big carp since the Eighties, and yet has been in the shadow of Scopex for a long time. (Often certain good flavours are not made so popular simply because so many anglers using them refuse to tell others what they are using!)

Few anglers have used both Chocolate Malt and Scopex together in their baits or homemade bait dips, glugs and soaks etc. I can assure you that I was excited when I thought of this unusual combination! Many anglers get worried about using concentrated flavours. I would suggest for winter and the cold of spring that using 2 to 4 millilitres of each of these flavours together will cover a variety of waters and you can raise or lower you flavour levels in 3 test batches of baits for instance to discover which baits really out-score the others!

For the cold conditions of winter and spring using a lower protein bait has many advantages especially if you make an open-textured softer bait that includes some soluble proteins that carp can detect extremely easily and digest very easily. In this instance I suggest you try a very crafty short-cut that will save you loads of money and can most importantly of all really trick those big wary carp because you can make you hook baits and free baits and ground baits too such as stick mixes, spod mixes and method mixes using all the same basic ingredients and liquids!

Whole and crushed seed mixes are very popular for carp and especially in colder months. To make a bait, ground bait or boilies or pastes using some of the very most successful seeds in carp fishing it is easy! All it takes is thinking out of the box. For most of my fishing years budgeting has been important so I always look for cheaper bait options without losing any effectiveness for big fish at all! This possible but takes a degree of know-how to be most consistent in choosing more economical product options to make top boilies, pellets and pastes etc.

One example is using ground baits as the bulk ingredients of your homemade boilies. Many anglers get the wrong impression of ground baits and think they are a small fish method; obviously the success of cheap bread-based stick, spod, slop and method mixes for example shows the best anglers are utilising ground baits in many ways.

Another point about ground baits is they often used to be made with the bulk of the bait being bread crumbs. Having tested many of the CC Moore range of incredibly potent baits and ground baits the outstanding nutritional attraction and stimulation they offer lends them to multitudes of other uses and applications.

Protein is not everything in carp bait making as anyone who has used maize, sweetcorn or tiger nuts for instance will know. In fact part of the maize and sweetcorn attraction is due to a well known protein-related compound. You must have noticed lots of talk about oils, sweeteners, amino acids, vitamins and minerals etc and all these attract carp and trigger feeding especially when used in combination. For this bait-making method I have elected to use a unique nutritional fine seed ground bait mixture.

CC Moore Seed Storm Spod Mix is a potent ground bait mix of ground or crushed seeds and other products including maize, cooked wheat meal, buckwheat, and hemp. These give off an amazing combination of attraction because they are crushed or ground and release all their oils, sugars, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and many other fish-attracting factors!

Compared to using many boilie base mixes on the market this spod bait mix is very unusual. It is designed as a ground bait and not a tight-knit boilie mix so it has excellent characteristics and properties that we can exploit in an outstanding cold water bait or even all year round bait! An open-textured bait has many advantages over tight-textured standard baits and perform in many ways better than many baits.

Inevitably cheaper readymade boilies are not made from top quality ingredients, additves and liquids etc that re-hydrate baits fast due to their soluble and water-absorbent or adsorbent natures. Many economy hard standard readymade baits often sit on the bottom and take a long time to even get soft before they start to do their job.

This getting soft is actually the penetration of water into the bait which releases the attraction of a bait. So I hope you can see why an open-textured bait can be so much more productive especially in lower water temperatures - especially if they contain potently attractive soluble ingredients and liquids all topped off with great flavours like Scopex or Chocolate malt for instance!

When used as a spod mix type ground bait CC Moore Seed Storm can be used alone on mixed with other things like maggots, mixed pellets a multitude of other additives, ingredients and liquids etc.

Note: you are advised to make baits using carbohydrate ingredient alongside high protein ones in order that carp better maximise the available protein in the bait (as in so-called protein sparing,) so in a high protein bait an inclusion of 25 percent carbohydrate component is essential to avoid expensive waste!

For those anglers new to various ground bait delivery systems such as spodding, this involves the use of an aerodynamically shaped closed-end feeder type product called a spod usually. This device is tied directly to your strong rod and main line and filled with ground bait (and cast out.) When this device lands in your swim it up-ends and releases all your potent ground bait into the water! (The range and accuracy of delivery of this form of ground baiting becomes extreme with practice!)

A spod mix is mixed like many other ground baits (as you prefer with less or more liquids.) you may just use water or CC Moore Liquid Super Slop and Liquid Betaine or other potent liquid foods and flavours etc to make prepared ground bait more sloppy or firmer so it stays more intact for longer as it falls through the water and lands on the bottom silt, clay, gravel, chod or weed etc.

When Seed Storm Spod Mix hits the water it literally explodes into a cloud of fine particles so dispersing seed and liquid attraction all around you baits really spreading out to pull fish in to your baits from different depth and distances!

Crushed seeds are composed to a great degree of absorbent carbohydrates which also impart binding qualities. As this mix is so open to make it into baits such as boilies, pellets and pastes and more resilient method mixes it requires ingredients ideal for this purpose.

Seed Storm if a blend of many of the most effective particles ever used in angling. These particles have been crushed or ground to ensure they release all of their powerful natural attractors after being cold mixed with water alone. Containing hemp, maize, buckwheat, oatmeal, cooked wheat meal and other fish attracting products, this mix literally explodes on the lake bed producing a vast area of particles for fish to feed on.

Due to the absorbent nature of this mix it is perfect for use with any combination of liquids as a carrier. You can bind ground baits like this spod mix, or use or stick mixes or method mixes and other ingredients etc together with many other products to make boilies, pellets and pastes etc.

CC Moore ready crushed Sluis CLO equivalent is very useful general purpose bait binder ideal fully complimenting the crushed seeds in the Seed Storm mix. In terms of nutritional attraction it is far superior to maize flour or semolina for example but may be used in combination with these bulk binders and other ingredients for a harder bait or use with soya flour, Vitamealo or Lamlac milk powders etc for softer baits if you wish.

How much binder or binders and which you use to create your baits is totally your choice as this comes down to your budget and personal preferences. However fish sensitivities and preferences for certain substances need considering if you really wish to maximise your bait - on the cheap!

Using powdered egg is very much a preferred method for many carp anglers making boilies - instead of using liquid eggs which form such a tight coagulated external seal that obstructs optimum bait performance especially in cold water conditions!

Powdered egg appears to produce more bites in part probably because it is not a liquid that impregnates every particle of the baits ingredients but leaves particles free to dissolve and lets dissolved and free bait particles to wash away from the baits far more impactfully.

A blend of cheaper ingredients like CC Moore Vanilla Extract powder, CC Moore Meggablend Sweet, or Meggablend Red plus spod mix, pure betaine, eggs, Minamino plus Scopex and Chocolate Malt flavours is a very simple all year round bait packed with natural attraction and feeding stimulation! Note: For more resilient longer-lasting but effective soft mouldable pastes, why not exploit wheat gluten as an added binder!)

You might opt for Tiger Nut Meal in your mix or why not use a really economical protein source ideal in such a mix?! CC Moore Roasted Peanut Meal at around 40 percent protein is an excellent ingredient well proven time and time again! Add a 10 percent whole egg powder (or more for more resilient baits) per a kilogram of your dry powders to be mixed together, to improve binding in boilies, pastes and pellets.

Other CC Moore Spod and method mixes etc offer different experiences to carp and one in particular I have favoured very much and used in many different ways is Sweet Nut Cloud! Why not use this in your ground baits and boilies, pastes, stick mixes etc? Boost it with CC Moore Feedstim XP (liquid and powders,) Lactose Concentrate, Super Cherry Amino Compound and liquid Tiger Nut Extract for instance?

In boilies you could include this mix with other economical ingredients such as Tiger Nut Meal, Roasted Peanut Meal, Meggablend or Meggablend Sweet with Supergold 60 Maize Protein. This last ingredient is an economical highly digestible high protein ingredient (with 60 percent protein!)

It is being used increasingly more and more in the fish farming business as a cheaper more sustainable effective alternative to using ever more expensive fish meals. Considering fish growth and response to feed is vital in aquaculture you can see it is an exceptional product and is currently almost totally over-looked by the majority of carp anglers (so get onto it right now!)

If you choose to use the CC Moore spod Mix called Red Pepper Plus, then include Meggablend Red in your mix to make boilies as it has great binding and nutritional properties including those from the awesome Carophyll Red (in both products!) You might choose to add pure betaine; Ultrasweet, Talin and Fructose concentrate sweeteners and CC Moore Liquid Red Venom and eggs for a really potent cold water bait. You can boost binding and make harder more resilient baits with added whole egg powder, whey gel and egg albumin if you wish.

This combination can be flavoured with Chocolate Malt and Scopex to create a really different alternative creamy-chocolate spicy bait ideal for cold water conditions or all year round! Remember that carp do not perceive flavours, aromas etc quite in the same way we do with their much more acute senses and different brain coding and mapping etc. Why expect carp to like what you like - the palatability of many more unusual homemade baits may seem strange to us humans but carp love them. In fact certain components used in the formulation of successful concentrated sweet, fruity flavours or even spicy flavours for instance are not necessarily sweet, fruity or spicy!

One extra tip I would add here is when you have finished making your boilies and have boiled or steamed them and they are laid out about to begin drying why not try the following trick?! Sprinkle pure betaine powder over them so it impregnates your baits with this potent feeding trigger; this is a method you will not find many commercial bait makers doing to boost bait performance - and it really works in the cold!
