Betting On Horses For A Living - Even Professionals Can Make Mistakes!

Just to show that even us professionals can make the odd mistake, I'd like to relate a story about how I backed a 10/1 winner and it actually cost me £5000!

Back in the summer of 2002, one of my best contacts told me of a horse called 'Unshakable' that was due to run at Sandown over a mile. The horse was stepping up in trip and grade and my contact told me that I should have a confident win bet.

The outcome was that the horse won at 8/1, beating the well backed 15/8 favourite into second.

The members of my service, the 2% Racing Syndicate, were on the horse as well, as I had passed on the information to them. So not only did I land a nice touch myself, my members all cleaned up as well. Very sweet!

The next time I was advised to back the horse was two years later. Again my members were advised, and again the horse won, this time at 7/1.

In between those recommendations from my contact, 'Unshakable' had run no less than 12 times, without winning.

The point of the story is that, the horse only won one more race from that day to this, but I backed him on four more occasions, when I had not had the nod from that particular contact. Because I hadn't had the nod, I didn't pass the bet on to my members, but I got involved myself.

So I gave the bookies back a slice of the profit I had made on the horse (£5,000.00 to be exact) from the two previous wins at 8/1 and 7/1. So, although I came out well ahead, I gave back £5,000 needlessly.

Why did that happen? Because I came to like the horse. He had made me a lot of money and he usually ran a gutsy race. I became fond of him and made a point of watching him run.

The trouble was, I did not remain detached and unemotional. I had let my heart rule my head. Wrong!

I learnt from that and you should too.

As I say, that was a few years ago now, but I have never forgotten the lesson it taught me.

The lesson to be learned here is to try to remain focussed and don't let your heart rule your head when betting on horse racing!
