Budapest is the capital of Hungary. It is an economic, financial and cultural center with more than two million inhabitants. The area of the Hungarian capital Budapest has been inhabited for thousands of years but the name of Budapest is not that old ,it goes back to 1872, when the three Hungarian independent cities of Buda, Pest, and Ã"buda (Old Buda) were merged into a single city.Officially the name of Budapest goes back to this decree. However, the name Budapest had occasionally been in use for a couple of decades before 1872, although referring only to the agglomeration of two cities: Buda and Pest. Another name in common use was Pestbuda or the German Pestofen and Ofenpest. These names often occurred in printed books as the place of publication. In books published in the late 19th century, Pest was also commonly written as Pesth, and even today Hungarians still use the names of Buda and Pest when they refer to different parts of the city. Also, the name Pest is sometimes used to refer to the whole of Budapest.
