Selecting the internet security software for your computer can be a daunting task for most home users. It is even harder to judge whether free internet security software will be any good for you and actually do a decent job of protecting your computer. Luckily at the start of 2006 Google decided to help us with a collection of software know as "Google Pack."

Google Pack is a collection of over 10 free software programs. Within Google Pack you will find two free internet security software programs for your computer which protect you from virus and spyware threats. Google has used it influence to persuade the leading consumer security software vendors to provide free versions of their award-winning programs.

The virus protection in Google Pack is provided by Symantec. Symantec are the makers of the Norton AntiVirus range of products which are recommended by industry experts and recognized as one of the leading anti virus solution. The software provided in Google Pack is called Norton Security Scan and is built using the same powerful detection and removal capabilities found in Norton AntiVirus products. Despite the name of the product this software scans AND removes virus threats. More importantly the virus definitions which are at the core of the product are updated for free.

The spyware protection in Google Pack is provided by a company called PC Tools. PC Tools make the leading spyware removal product call Spyware Doctor. In the Google Pack there is a Starter Edition of Spyware Doctor which retains the award-winning spyware scanning and removal functionality of the full version of the software. Spyware definition updates are also provided for free.
