As you can imagine, the combination of sweat bathing and cooling conditions the body, and a well-tuned body is more resistant to colds, disease and infection. In cold weather, the warm glowing feeling lingers for hours, while in hot climates the body seems cooler than before the sweat bath.

The Finnish Got The Idea First?
In Finland, sauna-bathing is a way of life. They say it gives them as much strength as rest or sleep. Most people think of the finnish sauna as a dry heat bath, but in fact, the Finns throw water on the the hot stones that warm the sauna to create what is known as "loyly," a sudden burst of steam that creates a moist heat in the sauna. According to an old proverb, the steam sauna was called "the hospital of the poor" and "the medicine of the poor" and "the medicine of Finland." The steam bath has been enjoyed for the benefits of total relaxation of mind and body; to ease stress; relieve muscle tension and stiff joints; sweat out body toxins; stimulate circulation; increase body metabolism; keep skin glowing and youthful and to alleviate sinus congestion due to colds, asthma or allergies.

Steam Sauna Kills off Bacteria!
The sauna heat also kills all kinds of bacteria and insects. This knowledge was used widely during the Winter War and Continuation War when Finnish troops were forced to sauna (although with the unclean conditions in the field made it unnecessary to force them). While the men were in their sauna, their equipment was in another. This cleansed both very effectively while Russians had problems with many diseases.

Give Your Heart A Workout
Some researchers claim that the rapid flexing of the heart and blood vessels in the heat of the sweat bath is a healthy exercise that puts little more strain on the heart than strolling on level ground. The increased capillary volume, they say, keeps blood pressure normal. Other medical people, however, qualify their commendations. One Finnish study observed that whereas blood pressure of healthy persons remains approximately normal in a sweat bath, there occurs a marked reduction of pressure in persons suffering from high blood pressure.

When you take a sauna, the heat causes increased blood circulation near the skin and stimulates sweating which helps the body rid itself of unwanted materials and improves general circulation. Some people suffering from toxic poisoning or severe allergies need to purge their systems by sweating heavily, the sauna delivers this easily.
