Berrypicking In New Zealand

If you're visiting Christchurch, New Zealand, I recommend heading to the Broadfield Berryfruits Orchard to spend a splendid afternoon picking blueberries. After getting some expert advice from the staff and armed with a trusty plastic container, I headed out into the orchard.
Visions of turning into a giant Violet Beauregarde (a la Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) were playing through my mind as I plucked gleefully away. There are no prickles to worry about and the staff encourages the odd 'taste test' to ensure you are getting the best berries offered.
It is also a great way to meet fellow travelers from all over the world. After a very 'fruitful' hour (sorry, couldn't resist) chatting away, not only had I made some new friends, but I found I also had plenty of berries to enjoy on my morning cereal for the next few days as I continued my travels!
The orchard is located on Robinsons Road, about 20 minutes from the centre of Christchurch itself. The blueberry picking season runs from January to March, and the orchard is open from 10am to 5pm every day.
The 'South Island Explorer' trip starts and finishes in Christchurch, so it could be the perfect opportunity to extend your holiday and indulge in some sweet fruity treats. This trip also makes the most of New Zealand's adventurous spirit, from quaint Christchurch and picturesque Queenstown to the rugged mountains of the Southern Alps and the inspiring Milford Sound.
Stay in the high country near Mount Cook, walk on a glacier, experience the beauty of the west coast and soak up the spectacular scenery on a rail journey through the mountains - this trip is the pick of New Zealand!
