If both hands are right, then having diabetes isn't a big deal because there is medication to help keep it under control. Unfortunately, this is not true. Having a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight are the most important aspects of living with diabetes. If you disagree, then let's change your mind. Here are some very good reasons why diabetics need to stick to a healthy diet.

Reason #1:

When you eat small portions of healthy foods your body is better able to maintain the glucose levels in your blood, so that you don't have to be overly concerned with checking your glucose levels all the time; thus, freeing you up to focus on living life.

Reason #2:

Eating healthy helps you avoid a heart attack. By cutting saturated fats from your diet, you ensure that it doesn't end up clogging one of your heart arteries and forcing you to have a major surgery, one which is risky enough without you also having diabetes.

Reason #3:

By eating healthy amounts of nuts and fruits you can better control your weight. In addition, fruit contains certain types of fibers that have been proven to be beneficial to people with diabetes.

Reason #4:

By following a healthy diet you will reduce the amount of salt you eat. This in turn reduces water retention in your body, which can lead to kidney disorders, a common health problem for many people with diabetes.

Reason #5:

A healthy diet means that you are less likely to drink alcohol, which you should try and avoid altogether because of the high level of sugar that is in alcoholic beverages. Consumption of large amounts of alcohol is one of the biggest reasons people with diabetes die of health complications.

There you have it; five very good reasons why you should follow a diabetic diet. However, you really should only need on reason, and that reason is that you follow a diabetic diet because you want to live a long and healthy life. You can do so even if you have diabetes. A healthy diet will allow it. And if your life is not enough reason for you to stick with a diabetic diet, then just think of your family and all of the people who would miss you if you died. Hopefully, that will be enough to get you to change your eating habits.
