Want to save up to $1000 a year on groceries without giving up your favorite foods? Following the three guidelines below will allow you to accomplish this.

Coupons, Coupons, Coupons!

Find a grocery store that regularly offers good coupons. "Good" coupons are coupons for items that you regularly buy, like milk or bread. On the other hand, it does not make sense to buy snack-foods you would normally not buy with coupons and end up saving $1, but spending $3.

Stock up on coupon items if the item is one you would normally buy. Use the coupon, even if you do not have an immediate need for the item, provided you can use or store the food adequately before it spoils. It would make sense to stock up on canned or frozen items. It would not make sense to stock up on excess fresh fruit that might spoil before you can use it. It is not unusual to save up to $10 or more on $100 worth of groceries by using coupons wisely.

Store Brands Save Money

Store brand items are often just as good in quality as name brands. They are generally 15-50% less expensive. For some items, like sauces for example, the store brand item can be of poor quality. You just have to try the item and find out - there is a lot of variation. I have found some store brand spaghetti sauces to actually be better tasting than name brands, yet other store brand spaghetti sauces have proven to be quite bad in taste. Buying store brands can save up to $10 per shopping trip.

Buy In Quantity

When a cut of meat that you normally buy is on sale, buy large amounts! I will buy the "family packs" of chicken or pork chops, portion out meal-sized amounts of the meat in zip-locked bags, and freeze the packages. If the item may be stored or frozen, buy a lot when it is on sale. Buying in quantity can easily save up to $10 per shopping trip.

Do The Math - A Lot Can Be Saved!

You can probably save a total of up to $20 per trip for $100 worth of groceries by using coupons wisely, buying store brands, and buying in quantity. Multiply this amount by 52 weeks a year, and the annual savings add up to over $1000!
