The Mannequin has ruled the land of retail clothing fixtures for over a hundred years. The concept of frozen models acting as clothing display fixtures has permeated our connotations of retail stores. In fact, mannequins are so prevalent and effective that they have become almost unnoticed in their influence. Replications of human bodies might seem morbid and strange to a culture unexposed to our current model of retail sales, but now mannequins have become the invisible clothing display fixtures, showing off the fit and style of clothes effectively and perfectly.

There are a myriad of mannequins in the world today for displaying all sorts of products. Beyond the basic male, female, and children forms, there are individual hands, necks, heads, busts, legs, torsos, and so many other mannequin forms for displaying every kind of clothing, jewelry, and accessory. Though there is a different mannequin for almost any retail situation, the proper use of a particular mannequin form will determine the effectiveness of that particular mannequin display.

The main thing to remember is that the product or merchandise is the most important part of a display. Mannequins are wonderful display fixtures, but unless you are a mannequin dealer, keep your focus on your products. Mannequins should be chosen based on the products that will be displayed by them, not the other way around. It is easy to become enchanted by different mannequin forms, but it is most important to find the right one for each specific product or clothing line. Considering things such as customer demographics, fashion types, and sales floor placement will aid in the decision of what kind of mannequin to purchase. After choosing the right mannequin form to complement specific products, for a specific demographic, then it is time to choose poses, and hair styles, and skin color that best reflect the particular merchandise or clothing on display. Great examples of this can be seen in athletic stores, where the mannequins chosen have the shape of physically fit individuals, usually positioned in active poses. Perhaps a mannequin displaying "Under Armor" is in mid position of throwing a football, or a basketball shoe mannequin is hanging from a rim. "Victoria Secret" is another good example of effective mannequin display as those chosen are considered to be hypersexualized and seductive, thus effectively marketing products such as lingerie and undergarments.

Though mannequins are proven to be the most effective clothing display fixture, they must be used correctly in order to utilize their full potential. Everything from the type of mannequin to the pose and position must be complementary to the products being shown. Don't loose site of the purpose of purchasing mannequins, that is, to sell products.
