Parents With At Risk Children

In my work in the addiction field, I have become aware of many parents spending thousands of dollars to get their family life back. The past year has been the most significant in that I was executive director of a long term private community for young adults recovering from addictions. It was significant because I heard stories from the young residents as to what their lives had been like before they came into treatment.

The history that the residents told were all very similar. They had come from families of strong values, financial success and education. But the one commonality was that they had lost their son or daughter and had lost control of the family. The parents had no control over their child. The children were still in high school and yet were involved with a peer group staying out all night and using sex and drugs. Handling knives and guns were apart of their lifestyles. I am reminded of one family whose daughter was an aspiring young opera singer whose voice was being lost to crystal meth. I also heard stories that some parents have spent a half a million dollars already for treatments for their young adult(18-25) and it did not work. They kept using drugs and alcohol addictively after they left treatment.

So what would be answer be for success for these young people?

Having a good evaluation and assessment before deciding where to send a child is important. Not all treatment is alike nor are all individuals. There may be a multiple of issues to include depression or ADHD. With a long term investment with longer stay to address all issues would most likely insure long a long term result.
