Software Engineering Standards Providing Industry Integrity
Software engineering is a relatively new career field in technology today in comparison to other jobs. There has been a recent change in this area of technology by the industry trying to establish some consistent software engineer standards that technicians should follow and adhere to for this field.
The integrity of software engineering is increased with software engineering standards. Today more and more companies are requiring that their software engineers have certification. It is no longer the norm to pick up a job in this field simply because you have a vast amount of hands-on experience and training. Companies want employees and self-contractors that actually have taken the graduate-level courses and obtained certification.
Even though software can run different applications and processes on various types of systems, there are now sets of standards for each general category. There is a minimum acceptable level of performance by the industry. For example, it is not enough to simply install a configuration management system for a company but the software engineering standards require that the system run a particular way, meet certain specifications and perform minimum tasks.
Having clearly defined software engineering standards enables everyone to operate from the same base level. For example, how many internal software tests will be run on a product before it is fully developed and completed? Some engineers run extensive testing and others run minimal testing. Having a standard that is required by everyone in the field provides more consistency and better control of software products that are built and created.
What type of data is collected in designing and implementing software? This is another critical feature of the software development process that has a great deal of variety in the software engineering field. Setting down some basic software engineering standards in this area enables both clients and engineers to establish a better working relationship because everyone knows what the standards are for different types of projects. There have been over-all industry complaints that many software engineers are not engineers at all. They are simply people that are very computer literate and know how to write basic programs. These people are then assuming the title of a software engineer to secure higher paying contracts for services that are not up to the industry standards or often times even to the client's standards. This then costs companies a great deal of money and time working with someone that is not qualified to handle the project. That is why many companies are requiring that anyone that does software engineering work for them either in-house or through outsourcing have software engineering certification.
The current software engineering standards are being molded and set in the industry. Many software engineering teams and companies are providing clients with a detailed list of their software engineering standards that they follow to provide company and individual integrity. You will find that industry wide there are more and more standards being set forth and followed the same way consistently from software engineer to software engineer. This is building the integrity of the this part of the technological business industry as well as providing clients that utilize this industry with consistency and reliability.
