Christmas shopping can be tough at times, particularly when shopping for other peoples children. Coming up with good gift ideas for children can be harder as there are so many toys to choose from.
When shopping for a child that is not your own, you should consider,

Asking the parent!
The first thing to do is ask the parent of the child, what do they like? What colours/size/model/etc, find out if they have similar toys already. Ask if anyone else is likely to get them the same gift, the worst thing for a child on Christmas Day is have two toys the same and have to wait to send one back and get something different. Get 3-4 ideas off the parent to shop for, that way you can still choose a gift, but have the peace of mind knowing they will like the present.

Find out what toys they will get.
If a child is getting a gaming system, or a toy which has complementary items. It is a good idea to source these games or items. Most gaming consoles will come with 2-3 games which will last a matter of days in the child's interest, they like to flick through the games first and go back to there favorites later. Also toys like barbies and action men have available accessories that dont come with the original gift, these are great gifts and children love incorporating them with their "main" gifts.

What stores?
Find out what shops to go into off the parent or the internet. If you have children of your own you will most likely know already, but if not you could spend an entire day looking in shops that dont sell what you are looking for. Knowing which shops sell particular categories of toys will mean you can concentrate on gift selection rather than buying before the shop closes.

Is it suitable?
Find out either off the parent or in store staff members if the gift is suitable for the child's age range. Choosing a gift thats not suitable for a giving age, could cause parents of the child to restrict their use of that toy due to fears of small parts etc.

Will the parent thank you for the gift?
Giving a child a drum set is all well and good for the small amount of time you are there watching them play with it, but what about the parents who will have to watch them play with it everyday? You may also want to consider what they are likely to get you if you have/are planing to have children of your own. Would you like the drum set in your house?
