The essential element that holds together beautiful and sometimes heavy curtains is the curtain rod. Curtain rods are made of many different materials and come in many different styles. They can appear as an elegant feature to a stylish window dressing, or they can look ornate and out-of-place if not chosen with care. There are three main parts to a curtain rod - pole, finials and brackets. The pole holds fabric, the finials cap off the ends of the pole and the brackets mount the unit to a wall around a window.

Curtain rods can be adjusted if they come with two parts that slide into one another. The adjustable curtain rod is ideal for those who like to change their window dressings frequently or to alter the appearance of the size of a particular window.

Finials can be very plain and simple or very ornate - it depends on your style and taste. Finials can be made of almost any material including wood, glass, steel, aluminum, etc. Finials are often changed to give the window dressing a slightly difference appearance.

The brackets are usually hidden by the whole window dressing, so they don't have to be decorative, unless they stick out from the wall. This design creates a layered look, and the brackets do play a role in the appearance. Rods should be hung according to the length of the window. If your window is small, and you would like to create a taller image - hang your curtain rods closer to the ceiling. For a three dimensional effect, use double and triple rods for layering that will give a rich look and work as insulation as well.
