Choosing Porcelain Veneers Over Traditional Orthodontics

Many adults with crooked or gapped teeth do not want to suffer through years of painful, messy, and unsightly braces. Nor do they wish to continue hiding their smile because they feel self-conscious or embarrassed by their teeth. Fortunately, with porcelain veneers you can have a new, beautiful smile in a matter of weeks not years.

Advantages of porcelain veneers

· No pain - Perhaps you have had traditional braces in the past. If so, then you know how painful they can be. Porcelain veneers can be applied with very minimal pain and discomfort.

· No waiting - Braces require multiple visits to the orthodontist, while veneers can be placed in as little as three dental visits.

· No mess - Braces are messy and require much more upkeep than veneers. Veneers can be brushed and flossed just like regular teeth - no threaders required.

· Resistance to decay - While veneers need to be cared for just like natural teeth, they are not susceptible to decay.

· Porcelain has the added advantage of treating tooth discoloration. If your teeth have become stained or discolored due to medication or trauma, porcelain will eliminate this as well as any crookedness or gapping.

Are you a candidate for veneers?

Many veneers patients have had braces in their youth and do not wish to relive the experience. Veneers are usually a great option for these individuals. If your general oral health is good, your bite is properly aligned, and the crookedness or gapping of your teeth is minor to moderate, then you are a likely candidate. If your teeth are too crooked or you have an improper bite, then other treatments will probably be necessary before you can receive veneers. A consultation with an experienced cosmetic dentist will ultimately be necessary to determine your candidacy for veneers.

If you are a candidate, you will want to choose a cosmetic dentist with the proper training and experience. A good cosmetic dentist must have an artistic eye as well as a solid understanding of functional dentistry. However, any dentist can advertise as a "cosmetic dentist" without having gone through extensive post-graduate training. It is important that veneers enhance a smile in a way that also looks natural. A smile that looks obviously fake has its drawbacks.
