There are as many ways to avoid identity theft as there are to avoid theft in general. No matter how serious and prevalent this crime, the most important thing to remember is that identity theft is less likely to happen to an individual who protects his personal information and property. Someone who takes sensible precautions when dealing with people they don't know, whether in business or privately, is far less likely to fall victim to this crime. To avoid identity theft individual consumers can help themselves by organizing their personal information well. When shopping or making purchases using credit cards don't just hand over your cards to store tellers and then stop paying attention. You need to be aware of what the cashiers are doing. Also, be aware of what is going on around you and keep an eye on your credit card at all times. If you don't, you will be an easy target for identity thieves.
