Before we can begin overcoming procrastination it is important that we understand what it is. Procrastination is the avoidance or deferement of any task or action. Sometimes this is seen to be related to a desire for perfection. For people who suffer from procrastination they feel very stressed and guilty. Often their productivity levels will be low and they will create a crisis where none occurs. In some cases they will become annoyed with others as they will be unable to complete what they regard as their commitments to them. It is perfectly normal for most people to procrastinate to some level. However it should be recognised as a problem once it affects normal daily functions. A pecentage of people who suffer from procrastination will at some point suffer from chronic procrasintation. In these cases there may be an underlying mental or physicical problem.

As with many of our words the origin of the word procrastination is from Latin where the word Pro which means Forward and Crastinus which is translated as Tomorrow.

The causes vary greatly with the psychological version of procrastination but generally the person who is suffering from it will feel the following:-

1. Anxious
2. Will have a low impression of their own self worth
3. Self defeating mentality

It is also thought that people with chronic procrastination are conscientious to a higher level than most peole. This is based on their desire to be perfect or a desire to be an achiever . This is in complete contrast to their appreciation of what their potential and required onligations actually are. In some cases it may mean that the person may unconsciously over or underestimate the scale of the task in hand.

There has been much research carried out on the psychologiacal and physical causes of procrastination in recent years. Many studies have looked at areas of the brain in particular the pre-frontal cortex. It has been found that even minor damage to this area can result in increased instances of Procrastination. This area of the brain usually helps to filter out minor distractions and so any damage can affect this filtering function resulting in increased procrastination.

However all is not lost, it is possible to train your brain and your subconsious so that you don't procrastinate, for more information and facts you can read details at www.overcomingprocrastinationnow.com
