Whenever we interact with the inanimate objects that we use on a daily basis, such as jewelry, a favorite mug, or a set of keys, we leave behind an energy signature that contains information about our thoughts and feelings. The same is also true of the places that we inhabit. On some level, the objects record this data that is emitted by our bioelectric field or aura. The higher the base material of the object is in density, the stronger the impressions that are left behind. For example, a metallic object such as jewelry or a key can contain more details than something composed of plastic or some other lighter material. In fact, some plastics won't record this information at all.

Psychometry, also known as object reading, is the ability to sense and process this information mentally through the act of touching and interacting with inanimate objects and places. This is something that everyone does every day on at least a subconscious level. When we sense things about other people when they are not physically present or when we experience a highly intuitive moment we are using this ability. If you have ever walked into a house or building before and had a good or bad feeling about the place wash over then you have probably utilized psychometry on at least a subconscious level.

For most people, psychometry remains a latent talent that is only used subconsciously simply because they never attempt to consciously use it. Why would they think to? It isn't something that we were taught to do as children. In fact, it goes against the very nature of what we learn about how things work. It doesn't help that many people view such abilities as witchcraft, something supernatural, or a hoax. So the ability becomes suppressed at an early age. This ability is more suppressed in some than it is in others. That is the primary reason this talent seems to come more naturally for some than it does for others. Fear of the unknown also plays a major part in burying psychometric ability.

Psychometry is a passive talent. This means that you don't really need to concentrate to perform it. In fact, consciously thinking about or concentrating upon an object can impede the process. Part of the reason most people don't realize they are capable of this ability lies in the fact that their minds are full of noise. For most people there is this constant chatter in the brain both consciously and subconsciously that drowns out the information received by their more subtle senses. In this age of multimedia cell phones, iPods, text messaging, email, palm computers, and the internet, it is no wonder that people are distracted from their natural abilities. Our minds are constantly being bombarded and inundated with more and more information. All of this leads to an increase in the amount of mental chatter and a further suppression of abilities like psychometry. Noise pollution and stress are other negative factors to consider.

By practicing meditation on a daily basis, you can quiet your mind and learn to listen to your inner voice. Once you have learned to still your thoughts, you can try practicing psychometry by holding different objects that you are not familiar with. The older the objects are, the stronger the impressions may be. It really depends on how much and how often a particular person interacted with the object. You can ask a friend or family member to help you out by giving you objects to read. If you practice in this way you can use the feedback that you receive from them to hone your skills. Don't allow yourself to give up out of frustration if you are finding objects difficult to read. Reading objects comes quite naturally to some, while others have to practice a bit to get a feel for it. Once you get the hang of reading objects you will find that reading objects gets easier and easier with practice.
