Interior design is the process of shaping the experience of interior space, through the manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment. An interior designer is a person who is considered a professional in the field of interior design or one who designs interiors as part of their job.

What They Do
Interior designers are responsible for the aesthetic and function of interior space. This profession involves an in depth organization about getting a whole interior together. While interior decorators generally work with fabrics and color, interior designers are responsible for moldings, built-ins, flooring, as well as coordinating the professionals that are hired to do these jobs. Interior designers have to make the sale and organize details while making sure the installation is executed flawlessly. As an interior designer you will need to keep meticulous billing records, and keep your project in line with state and local building and fire codes. You are also responsible for contract documentation, preparation of construction documents, and provision of project management services.

Training
A bachelor's degree is recommended for entry-level interior design jobs. But there are 2-year college programs that allow you to earn your associates degree or certificate in interior design. Students in these programs take classes in computer-aided design, architecture, and spatial planning. After your degree program, you will need to apprentice for 1-3 years to gain valuable on site knowledge. Do note that 24 states require licensure to work in this field. If this is the case in your state, you will need to pass an interior design qualification exam that will make you either a licensed, registered, or certified interior designer.

Outlook
Only those with the best qualifications will succeed in a career as an Interior Designer. It takes a lot of hard work to become established in this field, as jobs are competitive. Recent homeowner wealth, and a great number of home improvement shows on TV will keep interior designers in business. On average, interior designers earned $40,670 annually. Those with 8+ years of experience earn upwards of $65,000 annually.
