Orchids are among the most beautiful plants in the world today. With over 20,000 different species of orchids, caring for them are often seen as difficult and only reserved for the experienced. Although all orchids are not the same, there are some basic guidelines in caring for this plant.
Here is some basic care information for orchids.
1. Habitat. Although orchids can be found growing on every continent except Antarctica, most orchids are found in tropical and rainforest environments. Orchids can be found growing on the grounds of the rainforests, but also can be found growing high up attached to trees.

2. Orchids need a sufficient amount of moisture to survive in your home or office. Most orchids require watering at least once per week or every other week. Be sure no to over water the plant, because too much water can leave to rotting roots and can eventually cause the plant to die.

3. Orchids also need good drainage around the root system. Water that does not efficiently drain leads to standing water that causes bacterial and fungal problems.

4. The roots need an efficient amount of air movement. This ensures the root system is able to breathe properly. Good air movement can be accomplished by selecting a good medium for you plant.

5. Give the orchids good fertilizer regularly during the growing season.

6. Temperature is also important to the orchid. Many orchids thrive well in temperatures between 55-85 degrees Fahrenheit. A temperature above 90 degrees for most orchids is not ideal.

7. Lighting is a key factor in growing healthy orchids. However, too much sunlight can cause the leaves to burn, and too little sunlight keeps the plants from flowering.

Lack of proper light is a major reason orchids do not bloom. Orchids need a certain amount of light duration. Orchids generally require 12-14 hours of light during winter and about 16 hours of light in the summer.
With the right amount of care and attention, you will have beautiful orchid plants that will display a full and rich bloom for many years to come.
