Hoodia has been in the limelight for quite sometime now after it came out in ABC's 60 Minutes and followed by BBC features about its benefits. Its popularity was so enormous that it has caught the weight loss world by storm.

Hoodia originated in the Kalahari desert in South Africa as was originally used by the San Bushmen to quench their thirst and hunger during their food hunting trips. They also used hoodia as herbal remedy for stomach cramps, diabetes, hypertension, indigestion, and other respiratory diseases.

Hoodia is cactus-like, succulent, spiky plant and grows in clusters. It is now propagated in other areas like Namibia, Botswana, and Angola. Among the various hoodia species, hoodia gordonii is the one that contains the appetite suppressing molecule and is now widely sold around the world.

It was discovered in 1937 by a Dutch anthropologist who observed the San Bushmen's dependence on hoodia in suppressing their appetite. Several years later, in 1963 a group of scientists from the South African laboratory, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, officially studied the potentials of hoodia as an appetite suppressant which later on was proven to be effective when the lab rat specimens considerably lost weight.

In 1995, a patent was given to a British company, Phytopharm, who worked with the South African scientist in separating the P57 molecule in hoodia being the main property in suppressing appetite. Phytopharm spent $20 million for the license and the opportunity to make extensive research on hoodia.

Phytopharm sub-licensed the rights to develop P57 to Pfizer in 1998 for $21 million who recently relinquished back its rights to the former after it joined Unilever.

At present times, hoodia gordonii is enjoying worldwide patronage and is sold in capsule, liquid or tea form and is available in health stores and in the Internet. The Food and Drug Administration classified hoodia gordonii as a dietary supplement, not a drug, so it is widely used by weight watchers because it safe, effective, and has no negative side effects.

Hoodia gordonii works in dampening your cravings for food without suffering from unwanted starvation. It makes you feel full longer therefore it lessens your calorie intake by almost half than you normally do, or 1000 calories less per day.

It might be interesting to reiterate the fact that hoodia gordonii is proven to be an effective dietary supplement for weight loss. Better believe it.
